About Me

My photo
I started this blog as I entered my 40th year, and now firmly in my 40s, I continue to learn so much about life. I'm learning that life rarely goes according to plan and that there's something new to learn every single day, be it a subtle nudge or a smack in the face.... This is my blog about muddling through my 40s-working hard, writing a book, being an ammateur photographer, trying to exercise and eat well, endeavouring to be the world's best aunt, as well as having fun and laughing out loud every single day.

H is for Hula Hoop

I originally wanted to write H is for Hope, but I think hula hoops are a little more light hearted, don't you?

As little girls, my sister and I received Big M scented hula hoops one year.  For those non-Aussies, a Big M is a brand of flavoured milk.

True to our tastes, mine was 'chocolate' and as you can well imagine, it was brown in colour and smelled like chocolate milk.

My sister's was 'strawberry' - pink in colour and scented with, well... strawberries!

Though they were to provide hours of fun and exercise, one really must ponder, what was the purpose of the scent in the scented hula hoop?

When attempting a Google search for an image of a Big M scented hula hoop I came across many stories that started with "My sister and I......" but unfortunately, no photo that would do the 80's essential item any justice.

Who else remembers having one of these gems?  Anyone, have a banana one?

  1. Nice post, Jodie! Back in the 60s, my sister won a hula hoop contest on a kid's television show. It wasn't scented, though. Had it been, my sister would have chosen strawberry as well. :-)

  3. I wish I had a scented one! I always just had ones that I picked up at the dollar store - and they always got bent and hard to use. I borrowed a good one that had a bit of weight to it - and I think some sand inside. I found that it worked best - but still, it didn't have a scent.

  4. I've never heard of scented hula hoops before but Big M had a great idea. Can't underestimate the power of subliminal suggestion!

  5. I had a banana one!....oh they smelt so good. I can still remember as you stood there "hoolering" the smell would waft around you. Wish Big M would do a re-run. These things were the coolest toy to have, right up there with the coca cola yo-yo

  6. A scented hoola hoop!
    Oh the luxury :)
I don't remember them in Ireland, or if they were here - I didn't have one. I did love my hoola hoop tho

  7. Was just telling my 8 year old daughter about chocolate and strawberry hula hoops and how cool they were!! Was wondering if you could still get them - she thinks they sound pretty cool!!
They should bring them back I'm sure they would be a HIT!! Didn't realise these were an Aussie phenomenon!

  8. Just talking about these with my 11 year old - it seems so strange, that I started to wonder if it was all a weird dream? :) Mine was lime, mm mmm mmm. :)

  9. How wonderful that this old post from 2013 is still triggering childhood memories. Our neighbour had lime too!!
